APPEARANCE

HARRY

Harry is small, even for an eleven-year-old. His entire body is ridiculously scrawny and his limbs have that overgrown, noodly look similar to a newborn foal. This often results on a lot of unintentionally flaily motions on his part. His face is narrow and skin pale as milk, giving the impression that he's spent most of his life cooped up somewhere dark.
Not a single stitch of the clothing he wears actually fits, and seems to range from being slightly too small for him to looking like he's wearing something tailored for Bigfoot. None of it is particularly colorful. Though it might have been at some point, the colors have all faded to the point of looking grey and washed-out.
His hair is a stark raven-black, and might be attractive if it weren't for the fact that it seems to have the permanent appearance of a piece of modern art made from someone gelling a black mop into an interesting shape. No matter what he does to it, it will always stick up in every direction, especially in the back.
His face seems to be the one part of his body that truly gives him life-- despite his pale complexion, somehow his cheeks manage to stay rosy. The one truly striking feature he has are his eyes, which are a sparkling, lively shade of green. Slightly less (or more, depending on how you look at it) striking is the lightning-bolt shaped scar on his forehead, souvenir from the car crash that he survived as a baby.

HEDWIG

Harry's beloved Hedwig, though he sees her as a living, breathing, and, judging by the way he carries on conversations with her, even talking animal, appears only as a well-loved but woefully inanimate stuffed animal to anyone else.
She is quite well-crafted, with stubby black talons, a small beak, and yellow glass eyes that are unfortunately covered in small scratches thanks to the fact that Harry takes her EVERYWHERE with him.

PERSONALITY

Despite coming from a more-than-crappy homelife, Harry seems to be filled with a cheerfully deluded optimism. While he has his moments of hurt feelings or even angry suspicion, his determination to stay upbeat and retain faith in his (imaginary) role in life seems to conquer all. No amount of attempting to burst his bubble will make him stop believing that he is magical and has tons of friends and is destined to defeat the Dark Lord Voldemort.
On the other hand, with his delusions comes a somewhat paranoid personality, and while his bright-eyed, open-hearted personality makes him somewhat easy to get the better of, he will often react to any 'disbelief' or negative treatment on the parts of others with extreme suspicion, automatically assuming that these people are actually Death Eaters sent to bring him to Voldemort.

HOW HE CAME TO MALAISE

Harry’s parents were killed in a car accident when he was about a year old. He was rescued from the wreckage unscathed save for the scar on his forehead, and placed into the care of his maternal aunt and her husband, who unfortunately did not give him a particularly great experience growing up.
Aside from the typical but sadly-unnoticed symptoms of physical and emotional abuse from years of horrific treatment by his aunt and uncle, Harry seemed to be mentally healthy until the age of eleven. It was then that he seemed to begin experiencing delusions, seemingly triggered by a gift from a concerned parent whose child was attending Harry’s cousin’s birthday party. The gift was a white plush owl.
After this experience, Harry began to immerse himself in an elaborate fantasy world, creating friends, places, names, and even an entirely new past for himself, involving the murder of his parents by an evil wizard, and the sudden responsibility of being the ‘Boy Who Lived’, whatever that’s supposed to mean. The Dursleys grew steadily more disturbed by their nephew’s creative exploits, which included speaking to both his owl plush as though it were a real animal as well as people who weren’t there, making up gibberish words, claiming to have magical powers, and exhibiting paranoia about being attacked by the imaginary figure who had killed his parents.
They tried to keep his symptoms under the radar by keeping him in the house even more and withdrawing him from school. It all fell apart when Harry escaped, claiming he was going to live with his friends, and attempted to jump off the roof of the house with a broomstick.
His arm was broken in the ensuing fall and his case made the papers when the authorities discovered his condition. The Dursleys were charged with child abuse and neglect, but given the option of avoiding jail time if they were willing to pay for Harry’s treatment in a mental facility of their choice. They immediately picked Malaise House due to its remote location and the fact that they (perhaps falsely) believed that Russian treatment of mental patients was harsh.
Upon finding out that the facility and its patients were being moved to California, they were enraged and are now attempting legal action to regain custody of Harry and remove him to a different, harsher asylum, claiming that they had not been informed of the move when they decided to place Harry in Malaise House. Whether or not they will be successful remains to be seen...

SYMPTOMS OF HIS CONDITION

Harry’s delusions were diagnosed as a form of paranoid schizophrenia, as he seems to experience both visual and auditory hallucinations of people, voices, and things that just aren’t there. He is firmly set in his fantasy world and fully believes that every bit of it is real. He takes his owl plush everywhere and speaks to it like it is a real pet. He also claims to receive letters from all of his friends and may frequently mention all the things that they are writing to him, although if he actually shows the ‘letters’ to anyone, they are simply scraps of blank paper.
He also claims to have magical abilities and will frequently pick up any long, thin object (of which there may be a deficiency in the asylum) and claim that it is his wand. While it is obvious to anyone else viewing his ‘spells’ that there is no actual magic going on, he does not seem to know this and will stubbornly defend his abilities.
Harry also suffers from extremely severe headaches from time to time. The true cause of these is unknown, but is likely related to the physical abuse he endured (which he seems reluctant to talk about but will readily admit that it included severe beatings and often starvation). He believes that they are caused by ‘Voldemort’ attempting to break into his mind, which suggests that in addition to the hallucinations and delusions, his schizophrenia has also given him an unhealthy level of paranoia. It would not be uncommon to see him wearing tinfoil hats.

OOC note: Harry is eleven and has been almost completely deprived of social contact for most of his life. As such, while quite well-read, he's also a squirrely little spazz and probably quite annoying while he's on a computer. We're talking tons-of-emoticons-and-excessive-punctuation annoying.
I promise you that this is purely IC. I do not actually type like a socially-deprived eleven year old in real life.
